To see their results click here: http://www.mshsaa.org/Activities/ChampionshipEvents.aspx
Coach Huff and I very proud of the team and all of their hard work this season (ALL of you!) We would have never had a Sectional Qualifying team if it were not for the dedication and hard work of each and every one of the athletes. Special thanks to the following girls who came out to support the Sectional race: Kyla Henderson, Jane Jackson, Diane-Jo Bart-Plange, Evan and Dana Willsey, Kierstie Bischoff, Shanelle Kudera and Maggi Wolfe. We know not everyone could make it but thanks to these girls for getting up early on yet another Saturday morning!
Tomorrow (November 4th) is the LAST DAY TO TURN IN UNIFORMS!!!! Turn in uniforms and warm-ups in Coach Huff's room (E109) at the end of the day Tuesday. We will also ask all athletes to fill out their end of the season evaluation.
Beginning next week and through the Winter break, we will meet and run as a group after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These are optional workouts but a great way to stay in shape for spring sports. We will meet in the hall by the locker rooms. All athletes are welcomed to attend - not just returning CC athletes! Track conditioning will start in January after the Winter Break.
Thanks again to all of the parents for all of their support this season - we could have never done this without you!!!

Thank you- Marathon Volunteers!

Please read the following comments below from Barb Rinne (leader of the relay exchange volunteers) and Chuck Manthey - volunteer coordinator for the entire Marathon. This is the first time a high school cross country team has volunteered and our girls did such a great job, the race coordinators are already asking me when we have a free Saturday next year! As ALWAYS, our Park Hill South runners represented us well and made a great impression. We all know how great these girls are but it is nice to receive accolades from outside of our district! WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU AND PROUD TO BE YOUR COACHES!!!!

"I would like to thank the Park Hill South Cross Country girls for their help at the first relay exchange zone. They showed up with enthusiasm, excitement, and were asking what they could do. They were key in getting set-up, identifying relay runners in advance, and ensuring the exchange. This exchange zone saw all half marathoners and marathoners going by, so it was very important to have so much help. They cheered loudly for the runners and brought a lot of energy to our duties. We couldn't have done it without them!" - Barb

"Yes, many thanks to your Team, Pam. I have not put together a proper 'thank you' to everyone yet. However, I heard from many others that your young ladies did an absolutely great job Saturday morning. As our relay event grows there will continued pressure on the first exchange volunteers to handle increasing volume of runners/activities in the same short period of time. Pam, please thank each one of them for us. I would like to know what they thought of the event and your thoughts as well. Our event would not grow or become the success it has without dedicated runners giving up or sacrificing their running for one Saturday so many others can run in the Half, Full or Relay. Yes, we are always looking for volunteers, but volunteers with running experience is PRICELESS." - Chuck

Volunteers at the marathon were: Kyla and Miranda Henderson, Rachael and Miranda Norfleet, Lauren Kuhn, Evan, Amy and Dana Willsey, Kierstie Bischoff, Jane Jackson, Jessica Waddle, Abby Werner, Maggi Wolfe and Natalie Clifford.

Districts Saturday

Our district meet is this Saturday, October 25th at Swope Park. ALL Cross Country athletes can ride the bus with the team on Saturday. We will leave PHS at 8:00 Saturday morning. The boys run at 10:00 and the girls run at 10:30. Please come out to support the team!
The banquet for CC is next Monday, October 27th at Cascomes at 6:00. ALL banquet money is due Wednesday, October 22 to Coach Lerch. Each person is $11.00 and checks can be made out to Cascomes - NOT PHS.
This weekend, 14 of our athletes volunteered at the Waddell and Reed Kansas City Marathon. This is was an excellent way to see first hand that running is a lifetime sport as these girls saw runners from every walk of life and age group. Over 8000 runners participated in the 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon and Marathon Relay. Coach Huff showed her SISU this weekend and set a PR in the half marathon by 3 minutes with a time of 1:51! Way to go Coach Huff! Coach Huff shows us that racing is constantly evolving for each runner and each and every runner can always run faster-even after years of running. Coach Huff and I would both like to thank the 14 athletes who came out to volunteer and cheer us on. We felt like celebrities at mile 6.5 when 14 exuberant cheerleaders yelled our names! What an excellent push of energy at the half way mark! Thanks for waking up early on your weekend off to come out and support us.
Practice this week: Monday - bus to Walden, Tuesday - on campus workout, Wednesday- bus to swope Park, Thursday - on campus workout, Friday - pre-meet.
ALL runners who have not turned in their uniforms will have the opportunity to turn them in NEXT Tuesday, after school in Coach Huff's room. Please do not bring them to the banquet or toour rooms prior to that date as we need each athlete to fill out paperwork as they turn in their uniforms. ALL lockers must be cleaned out by THIS FRIDAY!!!

Weston is a Hit!

We had a great time yesterday on our trip to Weston. Weston Bend State Park is absolutely beautiful right now- I encourage you all to go if you have time! On your way back into KC, stop at Vaughn's Apple Orchard! I think all of the girls will confirm they enjoyed their treats. Coach Huff and I noticed that the sugar and noise level was at an all time high on the bus on the trip back:)

We still have 10 blankets left from the booster club. If you have not already purchased a blanket - please let me now if you would like to at this time.

Thanks!

This week in CC

This is our last week as a full team! Today's practice will be on campus and over by 4:30. Tomorrow, we travel to Weston Bend State Park and run the trail there. After we finish running, we will go to Vaughn's Apple Orchard to vote on banquet awards and fill up on caramel apples. Unfortunately, the apple snack shack is not open during the week anymore so no apple fritters or slushies. Thursday, we will have another short campus workout. Thursday night is the pasta party hosted by Bogels, Willseys and Hendersons. Friday is premeet practice and meeting - we will be finished by 4:00. (Note: this is a change from the calendar that says we are traveling to English Landing Park Friday.) Friday morning at 7:00 in my classroom, the athletes will exchange their pep baskets that they drew names for last Friday in practice. Friday night is the homecoming football game. All athletes are encouraged to attend the game, stay through half time and then head home to get some rest for our big race Saturday! Saturday morning, we will leave PHS at 9:00. The varsity girls run at 11:30 (this includes all seniors and the following runners: Katy Lindsey, Miranda Norfleet, Katy Riojas, Lauren Black, Amy Willsey, Jeanie Lohnes and Jessica Newsom). The JV race is at 12:30 and includes ALL 10th and 11th graders (not already running varsity) and Miranda Henderson, Abby Werner and Ellie Link. All other 9th graders will run at 1:30. Snack bags Saturday are provided by the Sickman and Jackson families. Please make sure athletes are drinking plenty of water this week and getting plenty of rest. We will cut back significantly in our workouts to provide the freshest legs possible for Saturday. Saturday's weather is currently calling for low 80s so it will be plenty hot by the time we run our races. If we plan accordingly and get lots of water, we will be fine!
The top 12-14 runners will continue to practice for the next 2 weeks for our District competition on the 25th of October. I will call each of the athletes Sunday if they are expected to be at practice Monday. (The top 7 runners will automatically move on, the remainder of the runners will be determined by time.) There is no school for students Monday, but teachers have meetings so practice will be at 3:00 at English Landing Park. ALL Banquet money is due Wednesday, October 22nd, information on the banquet was sent home Friday with each athlete. Checks must be made out to Cascone's. Friday, October 17th there will be a meeting for the ENTIRE TEAM after school. Athletes who have completed their season are expected to turn in their warm-ups and uniforms at this time. These athletes will also be expected to clean out their lockers at this time.

PHS at KC Metro Invitational

Great job this weekend at the KC metro invitational. We had more athletes medal this year than in the past 5 years! That is SUPER AND almost every runner ran her personal record! This is a great high point to carry us through the conference meet. Overall, the 9th grade team finished 7th, the 10th grade team finished 6th, the JV team finished 7th and Varsity finished 22nd. It is important to note that we finished just behind Truman who is also in our conference. We will need to run our fastest times of the season to win conference this year - meaning our top 5 runners must beat Truman's 4th and 5th place runners. We beat Park Hill and Oak Park who are also in our conference. The conference meet looks like it will be a great race! Thanks to Amy Wilson and the Gonner family for this week's snack bags and to the Bischoff, Childers and Kuhns for hosting the pasta party this week. Thanks again to the Kuhns for hosting this year's Extravaganza!

2008 Extravaganza

The Extravaganza is this Saturday, October 4th at the Kuhn house - 6030 N. Forrest Drive (in Thousand Oaks). All girls cross country athletes are invited to attended. Athletes are reminded to bring sleeping bags/blankets and a pillow. Kuhns are graciously going to grill out Saturday night and will provide the meat-all athletes are asked to help out by bringing the following:

Freshmen - breakfast foods for Sunday morning (bagels, juice, fruit, doughnuts, etc.)

Sophomores - a side item for dinner (pasta salad, potato salad, chips, dip, etc)

Juniors - dessert

Seniors - bottled water (6-12 each)

Just a reminder, this night is a night meant for team bonding and safe, good times. The boys' CC "Extravamanza" got a little carried away at their team night (see photo). We don't feel retaliation is necessary and I will remind you that our trip to Weston is scheduled for next Wednesday and we all really want to go!!!! So..have fun, be safe and courteous-like always!!!

Inspiration

Inspiration can come in so many different forms. Sometimes, inspiration is intrinsic- we are inspired to beat our fastest time, to get in better shape, to beat our sister, to win SISU. Other times, it is extrinsic - "If I finish this race, I am eating ice cream for lunch." or "If I PR at KC Metro, I am buying myself new running shorts." Often times, inspiration comes from individuals - whether it is 50 high school girls, Deena Kastor, our parents, friends, daughters or siblings - these people can give us that strength we need to push ourselves harder, faster and further than we have pushed ourselves ever before. Today, inspiration came to me from my own mother, who completed her very first half marathon in Omaha, Nebraska. I was proud to run by her side, proud to watch her accomplish a difficult goal and extremely proud to cheer her on all the way, running by her side.
Although not all of you may believe it - you have ALREADY inspired others- you inspire Coach Huff and I all the time and I am sure each athlete on our team has inspired her parents as they watch each race. I also know you inspired the young runners of Lakeview this week when we ran with their running club. Mrs. Sandy Jacobs, the group's teacher sponsor, sent me this thanks, "Thanks so much for coming over yesterday. I wish that there would have been more kids in running club yesterday but your girls made an impact on all 4 kids that were here. I have seen 3 of the 4 this morning and they are still on cloud nine. They were busy sharing their stories so I think your girls did a great job of selling cross country yesterday. Leslie (one of the young runners) said, I didn’t realize that running could be so fun! Your girls definitely seem like they are a cohesive group who has fun and cares about others."
As we go into the last two weeks of the season for many of our runners, I encourage you to run INSPIRED, as you never know who YOU just may be inspiring as you race in this great sport.

Update on Platte County Meet Medals

Our JV girls won this JV meet but we were only provided with enough medals for 3/4 of the JV team. I have been speaking with the hosting school and coach to get medals for the entire JV team that ran at this race. I will have the medals for the remainder of the girls after our KC Metro meet on October 4th. Once again, I would like to thank the girls for their patience and understanding in this matter. We WILL get you your well-deserved medals!

Updated Stampede Schedule

The Joplin Stampede has divided the high school races into two divisions. Our girls will still race @ 10:45 but our boys will now race @ 12:10. Due to this time change, I do not anticipate us returning to school until 5:00pm on Saturday. To see the schedule, directions and meet information, please click on the link: http://www.mssu.edu/athletics/menscrosscountry/stampedeentry.htm
All athletes traveling to Joplin need to remmber to bring an extra change of clothes, a pillow and/or blanket for the bus ride and plenty of food and water. We will stop on the way home to eat lunch, so athletes also need to bring money for lunch. All athletes need to be on the bus and ready to go at 5:15 Saturday morning - yea!

Busy Week

I hope you have all dried out after the weather we have been experiencing. Thank you for your flexibility this weekend with the meet being postponed and us having practice Saturday morning. Coach Huff and I were very impressed with the girls Saturday morning as no one - NOT ONE girl complained about practicing or running in the rain (again). That really shows us that the girls know what they need to do to be prepared for meets and that they are ready to run in all conditions which is so important in the fabulous sport! Thank you for instilling this level of dedication, determination and work ethic in your daughters. We also had a great time relaxing after our run at Panera.

With the postponement of the meet, each girl will be running in 2 races this week. I have attached directions and information to all 3 meets we have this week. We will run as a full team Monday at Ray Pec. After Ray Pec, the top 16 fastest runners will run at the Missouri Southern Stampede on Saturday. The rest of the team will run in the JV race at the Platte City invite on Thursday at 5:00. Tomorrow, (Monday) we will leave school at 2:30. This means that the entire team will need to leave their classes at 2:00. The girls running at Platte City will also leave school early on Thursday (they will leave class at 2:15 Thursday.) The girls are responsible for any work they miss in class. Their teachers will receive e-mails informing them of the team leaving. I know that this is in conflict with academic awards that start at 7:00 at PHS. If you are going to try to make it back for awards, the best bet will be to come to the meet and sign your daughter out to ride home with you and go straight to awards.

The pasta party this week is Wednesday evening at the Riojas home, hosted by the Waddles, Werners, Jimenez and Riojas families. Freshmen need to bring a dessert to share. Sophomores and Juniors need to bring a 6 pack of water each. Snack bags for Ray Pec Will be provided by the Riojas and Miller families. Platte City snack bags will be provided by the Jimenez and Werner families and the Snack bags for Joplin will be provided by the Kissee family. I will send out a list tomorrow night of who is running in which race for Thursday and Saturday.

Next week, we have team pictures on Wednesday and a meet Thursday. The meet on Thursday will only be the top 16 runners as Grandview (the hosting school) has decided to limit entries. I hate this but I also see this as some good rest time after this busy week. We will run again as a full team at the KC City Championships on October 4. The girls will need to bring their uniforms to school next Wednesday for team pictures.
